09-12-13, 08:30 PM #1Unusual GPU Temps
So I upgraded from a Cooler Master 690 to a Cooler Master HAF XM, and I've seen my CPU temperatures decrease, but my GPU temps have increased. Previously, my max GPU temp was 72C. Now it's 76C. I have a 200mm side fan and I tried it in three configurations. With the fan pulling air in to feed the cooler, 76C. With the fan pushing air out, 77C. With the fan not on at all, 76C.
The Sapphire 7870 uses a blower design so the more cool air you feed to it, the better the temps it should have. For some reason, a large case with better airflow has resulted in worse temps for my GPU. So, I really have no good explanation, and maybe you guys would."In matters of style, swim with the currents... in matters of principle, stand like a rock."

You're dumping more heat from the CPU into the case with the new cooler increasing the temperature of the air the GPU can use to cool itself?
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

I didn't get a new CPU cooler, I got a new case. There's a 200mm intake at the front, a 200mm outtake at the top, and a 140mm outtake right in front of the CPU cooler. All the heat from my CPU goes straight to the 140mm and out the case, or gets taken out by the 200mm at the top.

There's nothing in the way of the front fan. The old case had a lot of steel in the way of the front fan, but the new case has much less in the way. Besides, I'm getting 2.5x the air from the front fan alone over the old case, and I ALSO have a side 200mm fan adding cool air.
It's also one of the coldest days we've had in weeks.
Edit: Dusting off the heat sink block seems to have reduced max temperatures to 74C, but that's still higher than it should be.Last edited by Allane; 09-12-13 at 09:46 PM.

Re: Unusual GPU Temps
My thoughts are this, You have 200mm in and a 200mm out, they cross each other out. Then you have a 140mm going out but with nothing pushing air in, maybe you are not moving enough in or at least an equal amount of fresh air in.
Where is this 200mm fan?
Where is the 140mm location??
What about your PSU,where is the air going for it?
As a fireman, I have to ventilate houses when they are on fire, and I have to make sure I do it in a fashion that will move the air. I don't open too many windows but instead charge the box(house) with air then have one way out(a single window).
in other words, Check the flow. Just thinking the air paths of the fans may not be productive.Last edited by Gunny; 09-12-13 at 10:02 PM.

All things being equal, except different cases, you must have a higher ambient temp in your case. You need to work on your air flow to expel more heat, or bring in more cool air.
Can you add the 2 fans to the side panel of the HAF XM? I see it will support 2 x 140mm fans on the side. I would run with the front and 2 side fans as intake fans, and the top and rear fan as exhaust.

For reference, I move more cool air in than I take air out. ~220 CF in, ~170 CF out. I only have 120mm fans and the extra 200mm side intake fan that I ordered. The case came with two 200mm of the same kind already installed, and the 140mm in the back.
Edit: Also, excuse the horrible camera quality. Tablets don't make the best cameras but they do in a pinch. This is what my case looks like internally:
