10-09-13, 03:23 PM #1Need a new work laptop
So I was planning to just upgrade the laptop I have, but I need more RAM, and to do more RAM I need a 64 bit OS, and I also need a new/larger HDD. I figured by the time I did all of that I would be at/near the price of a new laptop, and not have to do all of the work of replacing a bunch of stuff.(This part is normally fun, but I am too busy right now.)
Here are my requirements:
1. At least a 1TB HDD
2. At least 8GB RAM
3. 14-15" range
4. Cheap
I have no clue on brands and what not these days. I have office that I can reinstall. I won't be playing any games on it, other than maybe logging into EVE every once in a blue moon. I know this is a pretty simple request, but are there any brands or models that I should stay away from?

I would check out Microcenter/Bestbuys for what they have.
You should be fine with eve using integrated graphics (Intel 3000,4000,etc.). So, I don't think you'll need a graphics card in there.
You will most likely need to do a fresh install of Windows (either 8.1 or 7) to get rid of bloatware and such. If you go with 8.1, there are utilities that can make it look like W7, so you don't have to fool around with metro.
I would stay away from Lenovo, Dell, etc.
I've good things about MSI and Gigabyte. My personal preference is Sager.
Always always get the longest warranty you can.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

New plan. New HDD and Win 7 64 bit for my current laptop. It has an i5 in it, so I should be ok for a while with those upgrade, and the recent upgrade to 8GBs of RAM that I made that doesn't work because of the current 32 bit OS. For those about to ask why not Win 8 64 bit the answer is because Dell doesn't provide Win 8 drivers for a 2 year old laptop.

They may not provide drivers because they are included in the OS. Win 7 is a good idea either way for a non-gaming laptop.

Re: Need a new work laptop
I have a corporate DELL Precision M4600
Specs:
i7-2820QM 2.3GHz
8 Gb RAM
AMD (ATI) FirePro M5950
Win7 x64
And yes this is the "laptop" I've been using.
There are newer models (and mine is due to be replaced in the next 4-6 months iirc) but this one is great and isn't a bank breaker. So something in Precision line might be just what you're looking for (note: these are NOT small/thin/light so you have been warned - that said, I don't have any issues hauling it all over the medical center).

My current laptop is a Dell Latitude E6410ATG. It works for what I use it for, I would just like it to be better, especially the HDD. My initial thought was that a new OS would be in the 2-250 range, so why not just get a new laptop in the 5-600 range and then give this one to the wife. Now it looks like to get what I truly would want/need is more like the 8-900 range, so I will just go the upgrade route for now.
