Was just discussing that with Kanati. This is getting better by the minute.

While not exactly cheap, I just got one of these...and it's one of these for work, and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made

Thinkpad X1 Carbon Business Ultrabook | Lenovo (US)

Easily the most portable laptop I've ever held. It's 14", SSD, i5, 2.9 pounds. Half the time I forget it's even in my backpack. It only has integrated graphics so probably no gaming, but for work it's phenomenal. $1200 is pretty steep, but you're paying for the portability and the packaging; so sexy and sleek; all the peeps want to touch it

I run all of the IDE's I need on it; Visual Studio, Eclipse, Code Composer Studio, etc.

Re: Need a new work laptop

I've been in the market looking for a laptop myself, tablet just wont cut it...

Does anyone have any of those touch enabled laptops? How are they? Do they work with a stylus? The only reason I am riding out a tablet (samsung note 10.1) is for the stylus capability (need to take notes for classes where typing us moot)....

Whats the word on ultrabooks? They look uber fragile.... I'm looking to use the laptop for school (goes into backpack crammed with books), take it on flights (tossed into scanning bins at security checkin). Just seems like they'd crack at the first given chance...

    Tablet-

Re: Need a new work laptop

The x1 carbon doesn't have 1080, but it does have a matte screen (same as all think pads) which is nice. The screen might be a deal breaker for most but I used a17" macbook pro last year and losing the 1080 res for a 2.9lb laptop was well worth it.

Sadly, getting it that thin and light comes with a few other trade offs as well. It's a huge price increase to get 8gb ram instead of 4gb (base price) and it's also expensive to get the i7 instead of the i5. It has Intel HD4000 integrated GPU, which isn't very good for gaming but works well for everything else. You are really paying for the portability and the craftsmanship; the specs are on the lower end of average but very capable for non graphically intensive tasks.

If you need it for business it's fantastic. Just today I had a web conference call with clients and the web cam/audio worked without issue.

It has display port on the side which means you can buy adapters for dvi, HDMI, VGA for any dual screen capability you may need. (The laptop is too thin to have actual VGA ports)

Bunni, the one I listed above also has an identical touch version. I elected to get the non touch one for a little cheaper but I've read great things about the x1 carbon touch. I too toss this thing in a full backpack of books and crap and it's mighty durable (carbon fiber) and super super light.

New HDD installed. Win 7 64 SP1 installed. 93 important updates and 48 optional on round one. I see a lot of restarts in my future.
