    Yes, hosts files should have no extension, the '.ics' probably came from what ever text editor was used to edit the file... You may need to use something like notepad++ that supports saving a file with no extension (default notepad does not).

    Or use default notepad with administrator perms and temporarily remove the readonly flag on the hosts file (while it's open with your text editor), save as something (eg 'hosts.txt') and rename to 'hosts'.

    yup, redirect malware is incredible common, remove all toolbar addins. I have seen multiple toolbars with redirects installed at the same time compete for an internet address and brick a machine as well.
