It's possible. I think the 600 series and above have an built in overclocking feature if they are under voltage and heat.

Both nVidia and AMD are doing dynamic overclocking at the driver level. AMD had overclocking in their drivers for a long time but you ran a test and it set a static overclock based on some formula.

NVidia started with their 500 series doing overclocks based on voltage. They switched tactics with the 690 and above and based it more on heat/fan speed. (to make things quieter).

Yeah, it was even crappier with the 400s which were the live field test of the modern cards today. I have two 470gtx's and encounter many overheating issues (MSI Afterburner is REQUIRED to override the default 20‰ fan speed to try and cool the gpus) and crashing problems

The 400 series had all sorts of overheating issues. The 500 series was better, but the 600 & 700 series run very cool in comparison.

I actually never notice the fan on my 690. I've also never seen it get anywhere close to 70C. I can only imagine how quietly/cooly Heavy's ran when he had it.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Then, you'll probably want to avoid the new AMD cards.

The new AMD and nvidia cards are really nice, and the Nvidia ones are supposed to be coming out soon (if I remember what Wile said correctly). They run quietly, suck up way less power, and are much much faster.
