Re: New CPU!
now if you were striping a half dozen drives.... well... that's adding more risk per drive than I'd be comfortable with. But with 240GB across two drives... meh. Make a weekly bare metal backup and differentials on your docs/pics/etc.

Re: New CPU!
Why not try Windows software RAID? See if you can find any articles on its performance.

Re: New CPU!
For SSD's, I'm not sure there's enough (any) performance gain with RAID to justify the risk.

I also agree with WileE. Windows RAID is slower, although it would work in a pinch if you are having trouble getting your hardware RAID working.
The way I see it, the only thing I ever benefited from running RAID was from pure performance. And because I was running "death-wish" RAID 0, I certainly knew all of the risks, precautions, etc. I don't keep important files on the RAID drives... just games. If I were running a RAID where data redundancy was more important than performance, then there is simply no way I would ever use an onboard RAID controller again.
Yes, they are getting better. But I have had the same issues with RAID since my Intel P55, to Z68, and finally on my X79. At some point, the RAID array would fail. Only once was I able to recover it. The X79 board is by far the absolute worst, and seeing how it is my most recent board, I wouldn't put much weight into the Intel RAID issues being TOO much better. In my case, the experience got worse with the most recent build.

I once did RAID 0 with a Highpoint controller and two IBM Deathstars. Lost the whole thing to a click of death. Now in the SSD world, I only use RAID for redundancy both at work and home. The gains aren't worth the risk IMHO.

Re: New CPU!
Well I wish I could have just gotten a bigger drive at the time but I couldn't. I did the RAID because I had never done it before and to benefit from the combined space. I didn't really care about performance hits and it ran beautifully until I got my Intel. I decided to just go forward without it yesterday. I miss the extra space but it I can manage. I hope I can get a bigger drive soon to make up for it.
