I ended up just getting some replacement muffs for my G35s. I will keep them rocking for a while longer until they give out. I got an Avermedia LiveGamer HD for Christmas, so I will be focusing some efforts on capturing and video editing for a while.

The 558's are great, I have them. A sound card isn't really needed but having one better than on board will definitely improve your sound. I have a very cheap and budget friendly sound card, the Asus Xonar DG, and it does its' job.

As for mics, the modmic suggested by someone earlier in this thread is a good deal if you can get one. They are a small company and don't have mics available for purchase at all times, have to wait for the next batch/version to be made. A good alternative which is probably more popular among gamers who use actual headphones and not headsets is the Zalman mic, it's cheap and sounds pretty good as well.

Amazon.com : Zalman Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity Headphone Microphone : Computer Headsets : Electronics
