Yeah, the issue is that a lot of the cheap 30" 16:10 monitors are dogs or unknown quantitites. Then there is the Dell U3014 which has issues. The only 30" 16:10 monitors I am sure of are the HP zr30w and the NEC PA302 series which is out of my price range for now.
Ed. Part of the reason for my choice of the ASUS is that I am going to pay a premium for a good gamut for sRBG and Adobe RBG.

CES had some 2560 x 1440 res monitors at 120Hz with NVIDIA GSYNC. I was reading fantastic things about them. I would hate losing the beautiful picture of the IPS panel, but getting 120Hz and GSYNC for $899 could be pretty awesome.
Either way, I am holding out a few months for these new products to launch before upgrading my monitors.

4k monitors are going to start making a presence but I'm not sure all that detail and resulting lower FPS would be worth the premium. Also, you have to be careful with refresh rates. 60 is the highest at 4k resolutions but some only do 30hz at 4k resolutions...
