Yea there's almost no real advanced settings on the router. I just brought out one of our old ones and rehooked it up. It's working fine now. Stupid comcast

If it's a cable modem you CAN'T update the firmware. Especially if it's comcast provided. They are locked down so that you can't hack the shit out of their service and get a bajillion megabit.

Hell, for that matter, even if you buy one yourself and hook it up to comcast you can't update the firmware...

Buy you own router, call comcast and have them bridge your gateway. This will turn off all routing and wifi of your comcast box and make it just a modem.

yea they have the ability, if you use one of their supported cable modems, to connect to it and update the programming on it.

I would never use their device as a router however, I always only use it for internet and connect my own router/firewall. They don't need to be able to see what I have inside my house. If you connect directly to their cable modem they can see everything inside that you have connected.
