Got the Gigabyte 780 OC instead.

Question, I have 6 Intel SATA ports and 2 ASMedia SATA ports. What are the ASMedia ports good for?

There is a limit to the number of sata ports the onboard MB can control which is 6. It uses the intel sata controller. The additional 2 are add ons from asmedia controller and are typically used for storage devices such as hard drives. They should all be sata 3 6gb/s so I would use just the intel onbard 6 if you can.

if you have a mix of sata 2 (3gb/s) and sata (6gb/s) use the sata 3 for your ssd and hard drives and the sata 2 for optical drives

And grats on the 780, you won't regret the choice

Well, I'm all put together, and I got 8.1 installed on the EVO.

Now, how do I get the programs that are on the other hard drive working, I'd like to start with my Avast software. Do I just need to rerun setup or will the program still work?

You can't take a drive from your old system and just plug it into your new one and use the programs. You will need to format that drive after you connect it and download/install the programs again. When you install programs it creates entries in your registry and system32 folder on your primary drive. Those links don't exist on your new install so you have to install them all again.

    Re: Need partial build recommendation

I think I messed something up accidentally. I have Windows 8.1 installed on my EVO. and I have my old hard drive hooked up to the new system. I haven't removed anything from the old hard drive yet, there's files I would need to backup or move on there before I format it. Well, at some point before installing Win 8.1, the computer attempted to boot from the old hard drive. I was in the bios utility looking at the boot priority and trying to understand their layout. They have buttons for boot override so you can just go ahead and boot immediately with the drive you selected. They also have a drop down menu for selecting the priority 1 hard disk and priority 1 dvd drive, and then there's the click and drag icons for setting boot priority in the bios EZ mode or whatever. Anyways, point is, I accidentaly clicked the boot override button for the old hard drive and it attempted to boot from it. Naturally it didn't work, as Phyrelight said. Then when I restarted and got the Win 8 CD in the drive to boot from it, I was able to install Win 8. BUT, every time I start the computer, after POST and before windows starts, it asks me to select an operating system. I need to know how to get rid of this. It's annoying to have to select one. Then to make matters worse this morning I turned the computer on and it gave me a blue error screen saying there's an issue with Windows and wants me to run the recovering program. I was thinking it had to do with 8.1 and when I got to the recovery screen it said it wanted to do a recovery of win 7. Again, it does not see the old hard drive with win 7 in the boot priority, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do at this point. I was able to boot my computer anyhow this morning but it required me going to the bios utility and using boot priority on the EVO drive.

    Re: Need partial build recommendation

You currently have 2 drives connected and both have valid boot partitions, hence the issue. Remove the second drive (non evo) or format it and there will be only 1 boot partition. You should install your OS to the EVO with it being the ONLY drive connected. You do not want it placing any system files on any drive other than the EVO. If you have multiple drives installed on OS install it will span some of the files across them. You don't want that. You can connect the second drive to the system after it has booted to win 8.1 on the EVO using a sata to USB connection kit (basically turns it into a giant usb thumb drive, they run about 15 bucks online.) Otherwise you have to boot you win 7 drive and copy your files to another location off the drive (cloud or thumb drive etc) and then format it and then reconnect it to the win 8 machine and then format or initialize.

Is there a way to confirm whether the OS install spanned or didn't span across the two drives? In other words, if I disconnect the second drive and win 8.1 boots up properly then am I okay?

    Re: Need partial build recommendation

did you have them both connected when you installed win 8.1? If so there is no way to know until the blue screens start. win 8.1 installs fast, I would just remove the second drive and do a fresh install to be safe.
