Thread: G-Sync vs "FreeSync"

Perhaps my knowledge of how video cards and monitors interact is merely limited, and that's why this article made zero splash here, but it seems to me that Nvidia is holding a VESA standard hostage for pretty much no reason?

If Variable VBLANK is indeed going to be in virtually all monitors in the future, why have a 100-200 dollar part that accomplishes the same thing? Is there not a lot of money riding on Variable VBLANK, and so it's unlikely that it'll actually mature?

I want to see some discussion.

Basically, without expensive, dedicated hardware to handle VBLANK, only laptops will benefit from "FreeSync". Looks like AMD is once again out in the cold.

nVidia is re-thinking making upgrade kits available at retail. Having read the extensive how-to... it seems like a huge liability to offer it because then it become a precedent and people will expect it for other monitors. Biggest issue is it voids your warranty. Personally, I would rather get something that's already integrated and have a full warranty. I may do just that next year, depending on the panels made available with G-Sync.

Nvidia is using hardware to sync with the monitor. AMD is using a dynamic refresh which is software driven, but there are no displays that currently support this refresh method. AMD is pushing the next standard of display port to have this technology. Until this happens, GSYNC will be the only dog in the race. Don't expect Freesync until late 2014 or beyond.
