    Computer freezes on ASUS screen

This has happened to me twice.
First it happened for the first time yesterday. I had just updated the virus definitions and I updated my autodesk 360 software and the computer required a restart. I hit restart and during restart it got stuck on ASUS screen. I hit the reset button and it booted up fine.

Then today, I played a little bit of BF4 this morning, then was outside for a few hours doing carpentry work while my computer was sitting idle, when I came it, I saw my computer was on the ASUS screen. I never restarted it so I'm not sure what happened there.

I did a brief google search and it looks like this could be caused by any number of things. So far it's only happened twice so I guess I can't narrow down to the culprit until it happens with more frequency, correct?

I really hope I don't have to RMA my motherboard....

Test your memory(each stick individually and then add in multiples. If they all pass individually but not when teamed you probably have bad memory slots) and PSU before you RMA the motherboard. Those are your most likely culprits.

edit: nm on the memory test, I found it.

Also, does it matter that I only have one stick of ram? (8 GB)

Is there a test for the PSU?

No, one stick of RAM is fine.

If you have a volt meter you can test the PSU...if not you can take it to a local PC shop and they should have a PSU tester. If you would rather have your own PSU tester you can buy one relatively cheap.

Thermaltake AC0015 Dr. Power II Power Tester - Newegg.com

There are cheaper ones, that was just the first one that came up when I searched at newegg.

I have a volt meter, I'll have to lookup how to do it.

Just did the memory test, no error detected. But I wonder, it could still be the memory right considering the problem doesn't occur "every" time I boot up the PC. Is it possible for there to be a problem with the memory or slot "off and on"?

I've had Windows pass memory that ended up being bad. I'd recommend using PassMark MemTest86 - Memory Diagnostic Tool

You can burn it to a CD or USB flash drive and boot to it...test will automatically start running(at least the version I have does). I'd let it run for 30 passes or until it fails. I've only had a memory stick fail after 5 passes twice but it does happen.

As for testing the PSU: How To Manually Test a Power Supply With a Multimeter this explains it fairly well. It has a link to a pinout on step 5 as well.

Also check (run that memtest for a number of cycles) that you're not overclocking anything. Overclocking can cause issues (usually due to undervolting) like what you're describing.

Is there a free version? I clicked the link but it looks like it's only available for purchase.

Well, got it downloaded and made a bootable USB drive. I booted with the USB drive this morning. Geez, 30 minutes and counting. I actually had to leave the house to get my oil changed but before I left I saw "0" errors and "pass 2 of 4".

30 times? How long did that take?
