Seriously though, in a conversation today with my father, it came out that they run computers on Windows XP and use IE 8. That raised my eyebrows since they handle so much sensitive info. I've suggested Chrome/FF, but my dad doesn't think there's an issue. On a side note, on his Windows 8 desktop he bought a year ago...he insists on using IE 7.
How do I convey the importance browser security to a non-tech savvy person?enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

People aren't afraid until they've experienced the terror of getting their identity stolen, getting an account hacked, etc. It's all just pushed the back of their mind because they don't think it could happen to them.
I've also wondered how to convince people to be smart but unfortunately there's no greater teacher than a true threat

I don't know the type of information your talking about but.....
For HIPAA compliance a piece of software generally still has to be receiving security updates. As IE8 is tied to winXP that means April 2014. IE9 will die quickly after that as it is not widely used enough to have its lifetime extended like winXP was, and IE10 has a year or so after that. Then IE11 will be the only option to be compliant.
Perhaps legalese such as this is convincing?-- Intentionally Left Blank --

Yeah, compliance with various regulations (Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, PCI, etc) would drive any business subject to those regulations to use an operating system and browser that are fully supported by the vendor. IE in and of itself really is not as insecure as it used to be. IE9 and forward are reasonably secure in comparison with Chrome/FireFox. The bigger concern would be the underlying OS.

Wow, and I thought the military was behind. You could just start showing him threats to that particular browser/OS combo. Links would probably be sufficient but you could give a live example or two. Not much you can do really...people tend to ignore security until it bites them in the ass.
