The last few benchmarks of AVs I've seen starting in 2013 rated it pretty low in every category. I'm not sure what happened since it used to be pretty good.

I've used Norton Internet Security ever since their redesign 5 or so years ago. it's paid, but well worth it.

Microsoft Security Essentials... which is now Windows Defender on Windows 8.1 or later. It works fine.

I have found the best thing best thing you can do to protect your computer is to have the human not do stupid things. User behavior is the cause of most malware infections.

Some people like to bash MSE or compare it to others, I have used MSE, Forefront and now the new 8.1 version and I have had no problems. Of course, I come armed with common sense not to open spam or phishing attempts and I don't surf the web on untrusted sites.
