I've used Norton Internet Security ever since their redesign 5 or so years ago. it's paid, but well worth it.

Microsoft Security Essentials... which is now Windows Defender on Windows 8.1 or later. It works fine.
I have found the best thing best thing you can do to protect your computer is to have the human not do stupid things. User behavior is the cause of most malware infections.
