Most speculate it was to keep Google from buying it. Nothing to do with the actual uses or technology at all.

Things that will never happen in my World. As one of the last MyFace hold-outs, the World will not be invited to my lair.

I'm sure it could have some incredible uses, especially in the business World....particularly in the design World. It could certainly be cool.

Imagine being able to walk through your house you are building before the first shovel goes in the ground. Whole new meaning to virtual tour.

I did CAD drafting and VR programming back in the mid 90's at a college in Phoenix, this was the main push for the technology at that time. Of course FB didn't exist yet. The ability for people to walk through a virtual build and edit/conceptualize on the fly. They estimated the cost saving on a large building due to design changes/fixes before ground breaking to save more than 20% on the overall build cost. Someone building a house for example can walk through and decide that the 10 foot ceilings are certainly worth the extra cost. Changing that after the build is complete simply isn't financially feasible.

That doesn't even factor in the ability for an architect to have a database of all their work and be able to take pieces of different ideas and splice them together and walk through.

Jimquisition on The Escapist covered this:
So, That Facebook And Oculus Rift Thing... | Jimquisition Video Gallery | The Escapist

I agree with him for the most part. Being bought was inevitable, and there are far worse options that could have bought it. Basically anyone already involved in the gaming market, besides Valve, would have been worse. FB already has a record for not really interfering very much in their purchases, whereas if a company like Microsoft or EA bought it...

    Facebook phone - nuff said.

Facebook is a pretty shit company (run by a dirtbag). Whose sole purpose is to sell information about to you anyone with nickels to rub together. That they have no business being anywhere near the hardware business ought to go without saying.

But meh - I'll pass now. I don't like Facebook as a company and wish to have as little as possible to do with it.

Meh, I'm still going to order an Oculus Rift 2, but only because I am a developer.

It is depressing though to see the company bought up, especially since getting so much money usually results in the original developers caring, to drop significantly. Or they are bought just to be shut down, look at Astrid, who was sold to Yahoo...

Very lame. I'd wager, incentive is going to drop, which means motives to propel the project are going to drop.
