Pentium G3258 Processor Review and Athlon X4 750K Comparison

Intel just released an overclockable DUAL CORE chip for less than AMD's long-standing budget chip. This Pentium also out does the Athlon in almost every test, especially when overclocked.

On top of this, AMD announced it will no longer be putting dev time into higher grade consumer chips (ie. above i3 level CPUs), so Intel now has the complete monopoly on the high end until you reach workstations, where AMD still has a foot in the door.

I think I can now safely say that, for CPUs, AMD can never be a recommendation unless in special niche situations.

I've been saying that ever since the abortion of an FX line came out.

It's kinda sad because now Intel can just sit back on their laurels now and stagnate the industry the way they were before AMD ambushed them with the original K7 Athlons. In reality, the market for CPUs above i3 level is a lot smaller than you might think. Joe Consumer typically only needs an i3 or equivalent to do their casual web surfing and word processing and a lot of that is now migrating to handheld devices, whether smart phone or tablet. i5 & i7 CPUs are really only needed for people who do compute-intensive work, and even that these days is getting offloaded onto farms of GPUs.

I think Nvidia needs to buy the AMD fabs and start turning out desktop versions of their tegra line. Imagine what they could do with proper cooling on something like that. Hrmmmmmmm

AMD's APU lineup is still pretty decent. I have an A10-5800K that I like a lot. It costs $20 less than the cheapest Intel i3 product, and blows it away at pretty much everything.

AMD isn't down and out. They still have some good products, and their GPUs are back on par with NVIDIA, in terms of performance, and in most cases, better from a cost perspective.

There is still a dog in the fight. It is just a chihuahua with rabies.

I hate to say this, but this has been a long time coming. The problem with AMD has always been that they never ever wanted to beat intel. Even when they could have during the Athlon64 vs Pentium 4 era. They are almost now just a foil being kept alive by infusions of cash from intel to avoid being sued as a monopoly. However with the advent of the ARM Cortex CPUs AMD is no longer necessary.

The interesting thing is that other than in Gaming, the x86 is dying, no one needs it in a cell phone or tablet form factor, then ARM SoCs are now almost as good as i3's in some benchmarks at lower power. It will be interesting to see what happens when ARM reaches the desktop.
