When the company is buying programs that cost at the least in the tens of thousands like Solidworks (I think the basic package with no addons was ~20k when I was doing CAD stuff; Tech used NX 3.0 at the time however, so I used that), buying a piece of hardware that's ONLY $800 is a small price to enable someone to do their job properly and to take full advantage of that software. I used a 900p monitor on my laptop for NX back then. It was workable, but we were designing simple things and not huge interdisciplinary projects that made NX shine (NX had a feature kind of like subversion that was sweet).
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Upgrade Titans?
Exactly, to the dollar, how much cash is allowed to be spent on a hobby that produces nothing but PERSONAL satisfaction and contentment?
I need to know. I don't want to be called-out on sillyness if I want to do/purchase something that doesn't make me money, or feed orphans.
I bought a new (to me) truck in July, and I want to put some tunes in her. Then, no matter how good it sounds, i want to make it sound better. Need a budget, please.SourceSkills liked this post

Re: Upgrade Titans?
In (if I remember correctly) 2001 or 2002 I bought a monitor that cost almost $1200.
It was my main work monitor, and I also played games on it. It served me for more than 10 years, and in all that time it remained one of the best monitors you could get.
I had to look at that monitor all the time, and I have no regrets at all over having bought it. It was gorgeous, worked beautifully, and in all the time it was part of my rig something else always got tired before my eyes.
I gulped when I paid for it, but within three months I knew it was totally worth it.

Re: Upgrade Titans?
When I was living/working in San Francisco, the standard setup for the people I worked with was twin 24" Dell Ultrasharps (set in portrait). At the time that was significantly more than $800. Some people preferred a single 30".
I have friends (and a family member) who are traders. No one would blink if they asked for 4 $800 monitors.
Even if it's just an office assistant who flogs a huge spreadsheet all day ... they're going to be doing it ALL DAY, and good tools make that easier and faster.
Shitty "wide screen" monitors that give you 900 vertical lines are a plague on the world. If your job is to answer emails and play farmville, then I guess that's ok. If you have to do anything that involves really using your computer, then no one could honestly argue that spending an extra $300 - $400 on a tool that will last 4 years and make the user more productive for 4 years is a bad idea.
Cheers,

My current setup is valued at over $4k easy and I'd say it's worth it easily, and that's not even including my audio setup for my rig. I'm only at my computer probably half the time heavy is most days.
And asking your company for an $800 monitor is not laughable by any means. I've been at companies that'll drop thousands on single person just to make them a little more comfortable. Anyhow, you're silly too. Thousands of games you "might" but probably won't play is in no way greater than thousands on hardware that he "will" use, even if he doesn't need to. If buying stuff you don't need makes you silly?
Then you my friend are the ding-dang-diddly-silliest person here.

I am getting a Cutlass 442, and I don't currently have a place to park it as jet skis are in the garage.
Don't worry. If I am rich from Bitcoin come 2016, I am going to buy a General Lee, rent a crane, and then drop a huge NVidia truck with their latest graphics cards on it, just because.
