Internet help

All I need your help really badly.

Right now I am typing this at school. My internet is down. I was browsing some random sites, and I noticed that when I was done, there was a picture of two computers with an exclamation mark in my tool bar. When I clicked on it, it was talking about LAN stuff. I was like....uhhhh my DSL internet is hooked up to an internet box then that goes into the wall. Never heard of LAN settings on this computer...ok then lets disable it, (thinking that someone was attempting to leech off of someonelses, wireless network, which i dont have). I am an absolute noob when it comes to this type of stuff so any help is greatly appreciated.

I use IE 6or7 forget which, with www.att.net as my homepage/provider.

Fast solution to this: You should have a Network Properties option in the Control Panel (going from rusty memory, my work PC is Vista), select that, then you should see "Local Area Connection" in the list that appears, right click it and hit Enable.

OK... Generally speaking, your LAN connection (which stands for Local Area Network connection) refers to your computer's ethernet adapter, which controls the high-speed port on the back of your computer. If you disable it, you're disabling the controller for your high-speed connection, so that's most likely why you can't connect to the internet. In order to re-enable it, you can go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections, right click on the LAN connection, and choose "enable", or something similar.

In relation to your initial problem, the yellow exclamation mark indicates a problem with your LAN connection. There are all sorts of possible problems that can arise, but quite often they're temporary, or can be resolved by restarting your computer. In any case, give that a try and see if it works.

AWSOME guys thanks, I'll check it out when I get home. See this is why I love TTP, something goes wrong, it gets fixed inside a few hours (if its small) Mark one for a community effort!!!! thanks again guys!!!

hehe, s'ok, I went for the fast response. You had a pretty good detailed version.

(Years of systems and network admining before I finally became a full time developer.)

Could very well have been the IP address that the DHCP server supplies to your Modem/PC, expired. sometimes during the attempts to grab another free IP, it takes a while due to the amount of connections for the given range. Reboots can sometimes clear it, but most of the time it will grab another one eventually on it's sanity check.

If i got to techy, i can break that down for ya...

well I fixed it, thanks Deus and Iron....helped out a lot.

I am now able to connect and do stuff. as evident in my ability to type this post from home. Next stop, formula for unification (setting gravity = to electomagnitism = strong/weak nuclear forces)....

I've been working on a grand unified theory... so far the only thing I've managed to figure out is that it seems to involve cheesecake in some way.

mmmm cheesecake.

Actually, my girl made me a farkin' amazing mocha rum cake (with rum-laced whipped cream topping!) for my birthday this year. Now, I don't have much of a sweet-tooth at all (and that's a funny story for another day) but this stuff made me forget it and I inhaled that cake.

So, if it isn't cheesecake, it's gotta involve rum. That's all I'm saying.
