    SSD Opinion

Hey guys, finally upgrading from the old 7200 rpm HD to an SSD.. I'm looking at 4 models

Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

AMD Radeon SSD RADEON-R7SSD-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

    SAMSUNG 850 EVO-Series MZ-75E250B/AM 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

    Plextor M6S PX-256M6S 2.5" 256GB SATA 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

and am undecided on which to go for, I'm inclined towards the plextor having had good experience with their products in the past, but figure to ask and see if anyone has had good luck with the others as well

    Re: SSD Opinion

Personally, I would say go Intel. I've used Intel, crucial, ocz, and Kingston SSDs over the years. Those drives you listed are great but the Intel drives come with a free 5 year manufacturers warning. I have 5 Intel SSDs and I just replaced one through warranty and it was the easiest RMA I've ever done in my life.

I spent like 3 minutes with a live chat representative, they asked me for a serial number and an email address. I got a brand new drive in the mail a few days later.

If anything in your pc dies in the next 5 years, there's a decent chance it'll be an ssd so the warranty in my opinion is a must.

That being said, of the ones you've listed, I can personally vouch for the crucial drive as I've currently got one in my main rig and I've heard great things about the samsung 850. Crucial uses micron fabbed PCBs which are incredibly well made and their drive controllers are solid as well.

I own a Plextor and an Intel I prefer the Plextor because you don't have run trim and it's faster. Guess not on the warranty but mine is just over three years old without a hiccup.

I would recommend either Samsung or Intel.

Whatever you buy, be sure you setup Windows to automatically make a drive image at least once a week to your mechanical drive. That way if the SSD fails, you can RMA it and restore from the image.

Another item to point out.. Ars Technica has caught several SSD manufacturers sending them units with better memory chips in them for reviews/benchmarking and then what was actually shipped to consumers was a less quality product (slower memory or slower controller).

I would avoid any manufacture that has done this regardless how good their product is now.

    Re: SSD Opinion

The Crucial MX100 and Samsung 850 Evo are two very reliable drives, and reliability is the first thing you should look for in an SSD next to $/GB. The AMD SSD uses OCZ's Barefoot 3, which while an impressive controller, has reliability issues. The Plextor M6S uses a custom Marvell implementation like the MX100, and Plextor is well-known for their product validation testing, but the M6S is dated and slow compared to the MX100 or the 850 Evo.

If you want to never worry about the drive after purchase, the MX100 or M6S will be your best bets. If you want an edge on raw performance, the AMD drive and the 850 EVO are what you're looking for.

    Re: SSD Opinion

Samsung does have the 5 year warranty, guess I'll just go with that one... there's no real reason to get a bigger one, even with the small amount of media I have I can fit everything games , o/s, etc on the 256
