Re: Windows 10 Upgrade ...
I've never had it crash. My laptop sleeps when I close the lid and it's never had a problem coming back from sleep. My main box is ALWAYS on so that's not a variable there. I also don't overclock anything. There's literally zero need to overclock these days.

Sigh, I've been fighting for days now with performance issues, texture flickering, long stuttering and framerate drops in every game I play, game crashes, Widows disabling my monitors at startup, windows crashes, driver crashes, and all around shit-tastic Win10 experience.
I'm going to do a clean install but I'd rather do a real clean install from an OEM copy of Win10 rather than just the reset functionality that came with my free copy; can you guys that have done the reset confirm that it's actually a clean install and not some Microsoft hocum? - my other question is, now that my free copy of win10 that I upgraded from win7 is activated (I think it is?), does that mean that my win7 key has been consumed for this free copy of win10 that's permanently bound to my hardware? Has anyone read how it is actually bound? Should I just do a reset on the free copy of win10 and save myself some cash, or should I fork out the money for a real copy of win10, do a win7 revert, and save my win7 pro key for a rainy day?

Re: Windows 10 Upgrade ...
the free copy is a real copy. Do a reset (clean install).
They are changing the way registration works in the very near future. You'll be able to register directly a clean win10 install with your win7 or 8/8.1 key. But for now your seven key is linked directly to the 10 install.

Except that this doesn't work right now. You can't enter your Windows 7 key and get the software to register if you try installing on another device. I hope they address this so my 7 and 8.1 keys become transferrable.
I swapped a motherboard after doing an upgrade, and it wouldn't let me register my copy of Windows 10, no matter what I did. I finally gave up and bought a retail license as I can't wait for Microsoft to promise a "change". I am doing a build right now with a temporary CPU/board as I am waiting for better Skylake supported boards to come out next year, and I don't want to tie a license to that motherboard.

Oh, and the level of Windows you are upgrading from will be the same level you upgrade to. If you have an OEM Win 7 Builder license, it may not let you transfer it at all.

Re: Windows 10 Upgrade ...
Once you install once you can reinstall a clean install with the installer down loaded directly from Microsoft with no product key. You simply skip the step asking for a key. Once the install is done Microsoft recognizes the same hardware and activates without any key.
Just download the Microsoft media creation tool and create install media on a USB flash drive and you are set to clean install. Just remember you can't do it until you installed via the upgrade first.

Right, but you can't put it on a different PC. You are locked into using the same system, so if you are planning an upgrade soon, I recommend against doing the free upgrade to Windows 10 until your new system is built. I had this problem as I upgraded my last copy of Windows 8.1 right before I installed the OS on my new PC. So unless I get another copy of Windows 7, I am shit out of luck. I hear they will be transferrable, but I have yet to see it work.
