If the value of the files lost is far greater than the ransom, time to create yourself a mt gox "ish" account...
We had a client a while ago who also had the FBI involved, the feds recommended not paying, but stated that sometimes you have very little choice.

Backups upon backups here. I have my main system, that backs up to a secondary hard drive. That backs up to a NAS and that backs up to a NAS that is only turned on once a day for the backup. Yes overkill but I don't want to lose 3000 documents that are key to day to day operations.
