    Rant Against the Machine

I'm going to take a moment to rant about something that is frustrating me lately. Now for background I have worked for myself in the computer and network support field since 2001. Recently I decided to start looking for work with a company full time because I wanted the benefits of set hours and steady income.
I got a job 2 years ago with Valspar (paint company) and 6 months into the job had a car accident. I was sidelined for almost 6 months with a shattered wrist. I had surgery and couldn't work so Valspar didn't hold my position and I was out of work.

When I got back to where I could work now I can't find any. I've spent most of the last year applying for every computer support job within 50 miles. I've gotten two interviews in a year.

I've spent over 25 years fixing and working on computers and my resume has been verified as excellently written by two separate resume "experts". So wtf!?

I'm just frustrated and feeling like somehow companies are just overlooking me because of a short work history with Valspar. I honestly don't know what to do.

Well that's my rant. I feel better having furiously typed out my angst.

Comments are welcome. I'll take any advice that leads to a job. Haha!

    Hi Rumble,

I have been an engineer for some years now and from my experience it is not always what you put into a resume that counts, but also what you leave out. If Valspar was a short period of time why not consider leaving them out as you have had an extended period of time with a major injury.

One other thing. Are employers contacting Valspar?. They may not be negative, but a refusal to comment on your employment period my well be what is happening here. I could well be wrong, but as a precaution I would consider dropping them if it was such a short time.

I wish you well and God bless as you look for another opportunity.

    Re: Rant Against the Machine

With the decline in Desktop PC sales, more businesses and non business consumers are using thin clients, laptops, and mobile devices. There is still a need for computer repair services, but I have seen a decline in most mom and pop computer repair places in my town, but an increase in mobile device repair companies. Places that will fix your tablet or smart phone, replace the battery, etc. I work for a Fortune 20 company, and we pretty much swapped out all desktops, all users have roaming profiles, and if your computer breaks, they just swap out the thin client for a different one and ship the other one out for warranty repair.

The users that are NOT on thin clients all have laptops, and those get some attention from our IT field services department, but a small % of users in the company have laptops compared to the number of overall workstations. Most of what the field services folks support now is software and user issues and dropping equipment.

I hope you find something. Don't give up.
