    I think the idea is that the usual onboard audio (especially HD Audio) uses CPU cycles to do some of the work (3D sound formats like EAX), so having a dedicated sound card which does those with built-in hardware (instead of your CPU) should give you a slight performance boost.

    yes, same principle that applies to graphics. dedicate a processor chip to do nothing but process graphics, or sound in this case and you increase performance across the board.
