If you were local I'd have parts I could just give you, I've have so many systems sitting around.. but that said if you can work it in I do recommend 2 gigs of ram, the performance boost is nice but what I do love it for is decreasing load times on various games, that's made it worthwhile for me... now I don't know if you have objections for this but I've bought much in the way of used parts from ebay, I don't necessarily endorse it you understand... but for example I purchased an asus a8n32sli-deluxe mobo and a 3800+ dual core fx chip for a bit less then $150 combined and both work very well... finally the monitor, I made a wise decision last year and with money set aside a few months AFTER I assembled my latest rig got a 19" samsung syncmaster 930b... the increase in visual quality over my old CRT was amazing, if you can budget it for the future I STRONGLY recommend that for later

I'd say bump the RAM up to 2 gigs on the first list and get that, if y our not a DX10 system builder then you dont need vista. However you will just have to get it in a few months.

case or two, motherboard that's agp, things like that *scratches head* I have a system that has *issues* that I"m trying to diagnose that I'll let go for cheap if I get it figured out, specifically regular browsing, things like that it's fine, but anytime anything graphics intensive loads it freezes... know it's not the video card but the only thing I can figure is the motherboard... well you get the idea anyway..heh

Re: Help on getting a new computer.
I looked this over more closely. You need to spend as little as possible and get as much PC as you can. I went through newegg and put the following together for your review. It is roughly a 600$ system that will prove to be enough muscle to power your gaming needs for a year or two, and give you plenty of upgrade options to pump it up as you need and can afford.
This is minus the XP media which I am hoping you already have and can skip as that is another 100$
This system is just about the strongest most cost effective powerhouse you can get. The amount of horsepower for the money is out of sight.

A combination of these parts and what ebaconjr posted would also work out for you. If you are worried that you cannot put it together review this toms article that walks you through it in detail:
