    Motherboard / CPU upgrade

Having recently upgraded my one kid's computer, I feel obliged to upgrade my other kids.

The computer is used just about exclusively for gaming - online BF2 etc and other community online games like Maple Story. I might occasionally use it for converting video to DVD on Pinnacle.

I just want to upgrade the motherboard / CPU

Motherboard is currently a socket 478 with a 2.4 Ghz processor.

The motherboard I am considering is a

ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA LGA 775 VIA PT880 Ultra ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $64.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157107

The reason this appeals to me is it has AGP / PCI express slots (I can use existing AGP X1950 Pro video card but have PCI express for future) and it supports DDR and DDR2 ram (can use exisiting DDR ram I have)

    For CPU, I am considering

    Intel Pentium 4 640 Prescott 3.2GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail $94.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116197

I have not used dual core to date and don't know how to compare.

a similar priced dual core would be

    Intel Dual-Core E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail $94.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116036

Final thought - I have never used AMD processors - are there equivalent such motherboard / CPU combos that would be economically better?

    I'd appreciate any thoughts.

    Thanks

This is the combo I put together for my gaming customers....

Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 Allendale 2.0GHz which is a solid Core2 Duo processor
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115014
    combined with

ASUS P5NE-SLI which gives room for SLI if you ever want to but works real nice without.

You might find the processor less than at Newegg, but they have never given me any trouble about RMAs so I pay a little more for them.

    Re: Motherboard / CPU upgrade

yah u definetly need to go dual core these days for the games of today and tomorrow. the mobo you have is good as per your explanation, however do get the cpu that rumble has suggested because its awesome. also if price is an issue you can always get an amd mobo and cpu like i did and build a kick ass system for less than $650. I just oc'd that pc and now i am gettin 100+ fps in css with almost everything turned up i believe. so amd is not a bad option, i will post link to my sys config.

    Thanks Rage,

I'll probably go with the motherboard I mentioned, but for an extra $30, I'll go for the CPU mentioned by Rumble

Did it glitch or am I that good?

I was playing the Blood Harvest finale last night when it let me become the tank. I quickly realized that chasing them around would do nothing and went about looking for logs to throw around. I ended up incapping 3 of them with it and decided that Bill was a good target to repeatedly throw the log at over and over again while he was down. Not long after that a hunter got the fourth person and it ended. When i have a good run as the infected during the finale I usually have around 3,500 - 4,000 score. At the end of this particular finale with the Tank I had 12,988 points. Is that possible?

    I've gotten 25000

On no mercy 1, they were heading down the alley and they got boomed. They backed into a corner, obviously not knowing a tank was coming. Me as the tank, came in and hit all four of them at once with the car. The car was on top of all four of them rocking, and killed them. It gave me all those points

You get tons of points for hitting people with objects such as cars, logs, forklifts etc.

I wouldn't know, I haven't played the game in the while. Might be possible, might not.

Reminds me of a time when I was facing a group of newbs. Remember people, standing in a straight line with a Tank nearby is BAD!

I became the Tank, the other team tried to get back in the building by running backwards and shooting me at the same time. Unfortunatly for them, they were all standing in single file. So, I had a car with me, punched it at them, and it was like I'd just scored a strike at a champion bowling alley.

I got 19,483 points that night
