Quad FTW. Less cost, more performance.

I built a few months ago and I went dual. Mainly because I was not ready for the vista switch. I did however make sure that I bought a quad ready MB so that when I change to vista I can also move to a quad.

This would be the money if you were running XP IMO. Atleast if I understand it correctly that XP cant utilize a quad core CPU. Hell, I am half way temped in trying to sell my 6700 and getting one myself

Re: New CPU: Quad or Dual

XP cant but doesnt really need too, its the apps that run that use the cores. Game engines can and will be utilizing quads. Supreme Commander already does, and Valve will be updating the source engine to use as many procs as you can throw at with the next release.

Re: New CPU: Quad or Dual

According to Microsoft's web site, Windows XP Home and Pro editions will run any single processor machine, regardless of the number of cores in the processor.

There is a limitation for multiprocessor machines (that is, a machine with two or more CPU sockets such as Opteron and Xeon dual and quad processor machines). For those beasts you need to have Windows XP Pro. For example, my machine has dual Pentium Xeons, and I must use Windows XP Pro.

I just purchased the E6850 with an ABIT IP35 Pro. This thing will fucking scream!!!

For benchmarking purposes, the quads are great. But for gaming, you can get more performance from the E6850 than you can from some of the quad cores.
