While I understand the reason that they want to make a new standalone game, the effects of releasing a sequel a year after the original and claiming to update both simultaneously will take their toll.

After L4D2 comes out, I can see the updates for L4D being copy-cat features from L4D2. All of the later content for L4D will merely be tweaked L4D2 content. I am not saying that it will definitely happen, but it's something I envision.

Also, a better game running along side the original will only prove to split the fanbase. If you think it is hard to find a good game of L4D now, just wait until after it is competing with L4D2 for players. There won't be many new players to L4D once L4D2 comes out. As a bonus, though, most of the kiddies will have moved on when their parents buy them L4D2 for Christmas. So while their are less matches, the overall quality should improve. People don't want to troll an old game.

All of this having been said, I think Valve knows people will end up buying L4D2 anyway and the slim number of hold outs for L4D will be pacified when the SDK comes out.

Wait, yeah that just clicked. What would the point be for them to update two games simultaneously? That would split the community, unless Left 4 Dead 2 got the Updates the original gets.

However that doesn't affect my opinion. I never felt like I was promised anything anyway. I got my £30 worth of entertainment from Left 4 Dead and way beyond that, getting new stuff is what I'd prefer.

I think the DLC for both will be more focused on the atmosphere of the two. Any fututre maps for l4d will be set in the dark, erie-north east, have linear maps and predictable crescendos...perhaps even a gauntlet. Where as l4d2 new maps will be more dynamic, take place during any time of the day and hopefully larger becuase of the AID 2.0 path creating, and focus more on the l4d2 story line.

Its like owning a box of count chocula and owning a box of Boo-berry. Same company, but totally different tastes.

When they actually do finish the campaign for "The Last Stand" I'll actually believe them.
