    Re: Vista?

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit on my desktop and haven't had any major issues. Vista has taken a lot of criticism and I think people just don't like change for the most part.

I run Vista Business 32-bit on my laptop and the only issues with it have been a few incompatibilities with programs I need to use. The seamlessness between wired and wireless networks is great. I don't have to mess with anything once I have all my locations set up once.

IMO there are two questions that determine whether Vista is right for you:

Do you want an OS that is designed for the newer hardware that you have or that's designed for 10 year old hardware?

Do you want to play all the nice new DirectX10 games?

Also, saying that Vista is "a hog" is just spreading more FUD. Sure, if you think about it in relativity to XP, then you can come to that conclusion. Computers have more RAM(and far faster other hardware) in comparison to when XP was released and it's pretty silly not to expect your programs to take advantage of that. Also consider that now we're into the 64-bit era and the computer is able to access more total memory in the first place. I have 4gbs of RAM and while I have some "useless" shit turned off like the sidebar I haven't noticed my system ever feeling like it's performing poorly. I don't care if any of the standard processes are using more resources than on XP if there's not a performance hit associated with it.

    Re: Vista?

I want it to support my old(er) games, CS:S and BF2 along with the new games, TF2 and CRYSIS!!!

So it seems to me that Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is the way to go. Ok now the question is, what version should i get, on newegg there has to be 3 different versions of vista ultimate. What is the differance between the OEM the upgrade and the full versions? With their varing prices there has to be something HUGE.

    Re: Vista?

You can transfer the retail copy to a different computer. The license doesn't allow you to do that for the OEM, though I'm not sure if that is something that is or will be enforced.

Also, I feel Ultimate is a waste of money over Premium.

Unless you need built in support for sending faxes (who has a modem? ), the remote access conveniences that most businesses aren't employing at the moment (you can still use remote desktop/terminal services - this is worded to make you think you can't), the BitLocker encryption (which I believe requires a hardware module), a built-in automated backup tool, and/or a couple extra games you'll never play.

    Re: Vista?

To me it seemed that people seem to have less compatability issues with it.

It has and it's sad, but people will come around eventually. As you said, they will if they want to play the latest and greatest games.

Also consider, there are still many programs that have compatibility issues with 64 bit, although I've noticed more and more programs/hardware supporting 64 bit now than before so that really shouldn't be an issue as much anymore.

My problem is my processor as it is a fairly old and scored a 4.2, 4.5 for the RAM. So that is probably why it seems like Vista is a "hog" to me. What can I say I have somewhat high standards in terms of performance and jump to conclusions sometimes. Its my own fault though for not upgrading my mobo/processor/RAM.

Honestly for the compatibility part I'm not sure how true that is as I've mainly only used Ultimate. I got mine as a gift and I only know of a few people that actually have Vista running, most run Ultimate and I think one has Home Premium. I've just been told in general things seem to run better on Ultimate with less complications. They're IT people and I'm not so I'd think they'd know better than me. Just trying to pass along what I know, but I could just be misinformed.

Well, I'm in the IT field as well. I'd like to hear more about Ultimate being more stable with some evidence to back it up if you can.

Here's the performance index for my PC. I guess that could have something to do with it. Could be more bloat in Ultimate too. 8)

When it comes to Vista, I have heard to many horror stories to even consider an upgrade of my OS. As far as I'm concerned Windows sucks anyways. But hey, you play with what ya got right? I'm Staying XP for a long while....

I have ultimate (a buddy works for MS and got us all copies fro Christ-mass) and I use the remote desktop utility all the time. I used it on XP pro too. But seriously, unless you are a serious power user who needs enhanced security and some other administrative tools or simply have money to burn, you will be just fine with premium.

Remote desktop is of course useful, and is included in Home Premium as well. What I was saying is that if you look at the page to compare the Vista versions (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ns/choose.mspx) it's misleading and makes it sound like you have to buy Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise in order to use it, which is not the case.

Here's the details of what that actually is: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...onnection.mspx
