Very Strange issue with monitor stuck in standby mode.

Ok, so here is my problem: When my monitor goes into standby mode it doesnt always come out; like 90% of the time it doesnt come out. The system is running, I can hear things happening, the lights are on etc., the monitor is in standby mode though! (not no signal, but standby). And here is the kicker, it stays in standby mode AFTER rebooting! If I reset a bunch of times (5 to 30) it eventually boots with the display on instead of in standby.

I am at a complete loss to solve it. I have been googling all sorts of queries and scouring hardware forums, but to no avail. here is what I have tried:

Unplugging montior completely from power and 'puter for about an hour.
Switching to VGA D-SUB instead of DVI.
    Clearing CMOS.
    Changing video cards.
    Tweaking various BIOS settings.
Rolling video/audio/chipset drivers backwards and forwards.

Now I just turned off all power saving features and manually turn off my monitor so it does not get stuck in standby again.

The problem started as a infrequent glitch where the monitor would go into standby when I switched video modes (as in starting Civ or BF2 etc.) but I could tab out of the application that switched video modes and it would be fine. Eventually, it started not switching back to normal when I would tab out. And now, it will be stuck in standby even after rebooting.

The problem started with me BSODing everytime I shut down BF2. That problem was my X-Fi driver in association with 4Gb of RAM and has since been resolved. But it seems like this problem started when one of the bad crashes occurred.

    My specs in brief:
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64
    ASUS M2N32-SLI deluxe wireless edition
    AMD 64 X2 5600+
    Dual 8800 GTS 640Mb
X-Fi Fatl1ty and an on board HD Audio system
    4Gb OCZ DDR2 800

Here are my full specs: http://www.texasteamplayers.com/inde...5894#msg255894

Any help would be appreciated, having my somputer power itself down is nice.

    Hmm...

You need to trouble shoot this basterd. By that, I mean, you need to start disconnecting devices until you find the culprit.

It could be your PSU. Sure, it is rated at 700w, but something could be wrong with the voltage. Start with bare bones: CPU, Single Hard Drive, Video Card, single stick of ram, then test it... Start adding components after you pass each test.

Unfortunately, if it is the PSU, you would need another one to compare it with to guarantee that it is the bad egg.

There isnt really much else we can tell you from a forum. Sorry.

    yay! Sort of...

The problem is the Monitor (ViewSonic VX922). Not sure what exactly is wrong; my research points to something called EDID. Apparently it is a flashable memory chip that deals with PnP and computer to monitor instructions aside from actual graphics. Apparently this EDID is easily corrupted and can have this effect. I can buy a doo-hicky to flash it...but I may just dig through my huge ass stack of computer part reciepts and see if my VX922 is still under warranty.

Just wanted to let anyone else having a similar problem know where mine is going...and to let y'all know that I fortunately didnt have to test one component at a time for very long.

If anyone knows anything about this EDID I am all ears.

Now time to talk my GF into letting me use my old 19" LCD for awhile while she gets the 17" LCD and the living room computer can use the CRT... Wow, all the way back to the CRTs...

Re: Very Strange issue with monitor stuck in standby mode.

Update (and it supports my SLI arguments which is why I am posting it!)

I have sent off my ViewSonic VX922 19" 1280x1024@75hz LCD to be repaired/replaced under warranty (yay!).

In it's stead I am using a 21" Dell CRT I got at a local refurb company called "Free Geek." This Dell 21" monitor supports 1800x1600 Resolution.

So I cranked up the resolution on my games (and love it but it burns my eyes! ahh!) And low and behold I lost a lot of frames from increase in resolution. So I went and enabled AFR1 in my SLI mode. I gained frames!

    So in the end:

Multi GPU rendering decreased FPS when using 1280x1024
Multi GPU rendering increased FPS when using 1800x1600

More anecdotal support against those who insist they benefit from SLI on their 1280x1024 and lower systems.

In the end, I decided that I HAVE to get a big ass old LCD now! I hate the CRT because it hurts my head after hours of staring, but the 1800x1600 res is so nice for gaming.

Dell just put up a nice 24 inch monitor for 399, there is the more full featured 24 inch for 699 or you can go for the gusto and get the 27 inch for 1100!
