300 is not going to get you enough of an upgrade for me to really recommend anything. You going to need to step up to

Before you are going to see much of an improvement.

Options:
1. Keep what you have for another 6 months, your Graphics card will still be enough for your 17 inch monitor most likely and you will hopefully have more options on upgrades.
0 Dollars currently - 400-500 in 6 months.

2. Upgrade to one of the current mobo CPU slot types, decent memory and cheap CPU like the Intel Pentium E2160, or an AMD X2 4200 and then plan on another CPU upgrade when you can afford it
~$300 now, ~$200 in 3-6 months.

3. Intel 6550, 2 gig on Crucial 1066 ram, and a sub 120 motherboard.
~$400 now, in a position to upgrade to bigger CPU in the future if you win the lottery.

I can get nto specifics depending on what you decide.

So, the lesson here sounds like if I want to upgrade, and do it right the first time, I need to spend in the $300-$400 range. Like I said to ebaconjr, I'm tired of upgrading just to have the socket tech get obsoleted within months. This might also be the last real shot of buying any upgrades between now and later into next year as we're planning on buying a house shortly after the wedding and until the condo sells, funds will be tight (not painful, just tight). I'll be trickling down the memory and CPU I have now into my fiance's system (gotta get her ready for Starcraft 2!), so I'd only have the motherboard and her 3500+ to sell to compensate for the costs. hmm.

Alright, something to think about for now, then. Absolute worst case scenario, I toss part of the upgrade on my credit card and/or buy everything in parts.

Really, the FX-60 is bar none the best 939 platform CPU you can find and you cannot find it anymore, I will sell mine if ya want it.

Although having a juicy new core 2 system would be nicer. Just thought I owuld put this out there...
