Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.

Re: Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.

you have more than enough money to create a high powered gaming machine. I just did one myself about a week and a half ago for 1400 (including the cost of vista 32bit, 3 year warranty on mobo and cpu, new keyboard, a couple small items like keyboard pad, new mouse pad) and my 3dmark score is just over 12100.

Here is the link to what i did, also the link to my questions about overclocking. lots of reading but if you are not trying to break a world record, its not too tough.

in this second link you will find info on overclocking and it really helped me out.

If you are looking to spend that much and don't want to do raid, you may want to consider getting a 10k hard drive. That will improve your load times without the trouble.

While Raptors (the 10k RPM HDD's) are benchmarking notably faster than a standard 7200 RPM drive, RAID0 and RAID5 get cinsiderably faster benchmarks according to a guide I read on Tom's awhile back. The Raptor's are expensive and small also. Yo will get more bang for the buck just doing a RAID0 stripe. What about a couple Raptors in RAID0 eh? Got dough?

I would pick RAID before Raptor in performance land.

    what's that supposed to mean?

you can pick out your entire part list yourself if you wish.......OR you can say "I want to get this many 3dMarks".......OR you can say "I want to spend this amount of money".......OR you could say varying combinations of the 3.

if bigdog didn't build it, it isn't a bigdog box. stay off my copyright.

and raptors are loud as shit. 2 7200 caviars in RAID-0 (my previous configuration) = 2X the read spead, and increased write speeds. Straight up.

    but the real question is....why don't I RAID-0 anymore?

RAID0 increases the chance for data loss. If one disk breaks, both drive's data is lost. So in this case you have twice the chance of data loss.

nope. Chances of a legitimate hard drive failure are slim enough it's a non-issue for me. I've owned dozens.....and dozens of hard drives. From 40MB to by current 80gig's.....never had one physically crash.

but yes.....RAID-0 TECHNICALLY is riskier than a single drive system. Technically.

So why does the Bigdog not RAID0 anymore?!? the suspense is killin' me man!

Also, I have only had one disk fail completely in the past. a generic 20Gig in 2000. But from my first 5Mb HD that took 20 minutes to warm up all the way to my big fancy RAID stripe now, I have only had that one failure before I retired the disk.

Re: Preparing to build a PC - need YOUR help.

stopped RAIDing becuase I got tired of having to have a stupid 3.5" disk to load up the RAID drivers to install windowsXP (most motherboards now have them onboard, and new windows disks contain minimal drivers for most sata/RAID controllers....didn't used to be this way).

Also, in a 2-drive system, if both disks are used int he RAID, when you want to do an OS-reload, you have no where to put files/pics/dvd's/movies/important stuff (mostly digital picitures, server files, sounds, maps....important stuff). So then you have to burn CD's and DVD's like a clown, hoping you get everything zipped and labelled correctly, and that it all unzips and unloads correctly (which it won't).

so fuck RAIDing. For the showoffness having a 2X read rate gave me to stick it to sjt......all that was lost when it took me 3 or 4 days just to zip up my digital photos and server (TTP-related) files for storage. won't make that mistake again. I'll settle for the slow write speeds with the peace of mind knowing I can turn off my box, take out my F: drive, and walk away with everything I can't replace on my computer.

You need to add in an OS, take you pick, XP is still going to run everything the simplest and with the least compatibility issues, but vista is starting to come around.

Get 4 gig if you want, 64 bit os or not.

Looks good....how attatched are you to the sound card? If not at all, buy yourself a nice gaming mouse and use the rest to take your girl out for dinner and ice cream....I was always told that on board sound is sufficient..
