Norton is the devil. A/V software in general is the devil in my opinion but for most people I have to install it or I end up having to do more work when they eventually screw up the computer in two months. I have an Uncle who catches awful malware all of the time even with anti-virus/anti-spybot/anti-malware/etc installed. I also hear "but I have an anti-virus so it can't be a virus" all of the time from people who don't know any better. I'm willing to bet that most people with an A/V installed don't even know how to use it.
Personally I do not run any sort of Anti-Virus, but then again I don't use an OS that people write malware for. No I'm not some MAC user trying to rub his expensive computer in your face: I use linux.
Anyway...
It could be a number of things. If you lived next door I could probably come over and have it running within a few minutes to a few hours depending on the problem. If you'd like you could buy me a round trip ticket and I'll come up to Canada and take a look. Maybe check out some of the good things I've been hearing about BC while I'm there.
Are you running Windows? Do you have an install disc? (I'm guessing no). A lot of times I just re-install the OS instead of fixing something that is already broken. I backup the data on the HDD first of course. For some problems this is the only way to fix them. For example recently I tried to save a Windows installation that was riddled with viruses. I missed one spot where one virus had hidden itself and all of them came back the next time I rebooted the machine. I ended up spending six hours fixing that computer: Four of them wasted because I missed that one thing. ><
If I were you I'd install Gentoo linux but it isn't a casual user OS by any means, nor will most of your games run under it. I guess your best option is to send it in to tech support since it is free and all. Ten years from now you likely won't have that option though so at some point I suggest learning how to do it yourself.
Sending your computer in for tech support is kinda like sending your car to a mechanic. Most of the time your going to get taken for a ride and end up paying a lot more than you would if you fixed the problem yourself. If you do require such services I suggest becoming good friends with whomever is working on your stuff.
I have so much dirt on so many people from working on their PCs and I don't even go looking for it. Ever find kiddie p0rn on someones computer? I do all of the time. I never report it..I figure it is better for them to look at it on a computer screen than go out searching for it in real life. Aside from that I don't argue too much with people willing to pay what I charge, nor do I want to piss a lot of them off (some of them are pretty rough customers, even criminals needs tech support every now and again).

Your browser is blocking most of the bad stuff if your using those options. I use them as well and install them on every PC I work on.
Also your smart, you don't click "Yes" when a random window opens up asking you if you like ice cream or free p0rn. Most people aren't smart enough to realize that clicking "yes" to something like that is a very bad thing. These are the same kind of people that click on banner ads or search for "Hot naked chicks" on youtube.

I run no security software, and haven't had an issue in as long as I can remember. It's probably to do with the fact that I know my way around Windows like the back of my hand, and if I wanted to be a security freak I could set up permissions on certain directories/registry keys to block anything harmful from happening anyway. The real reason people like myself and you don't get problems is because we've got the appropriate knowledge, and presumably this is the case with you too, don't fiddle with shit. Hell I haven't even changed my wallpaper.
Antivirus software is, by and large, akin to snake oil these days anyway; the 'virus' as we know it is pretty much extinct, because the design of modern operating systems make them impossible to run. There's no such thing as a flat memory model anymore, for instance. Most of the nuisances out there are just silly rootkits and malware which can be removed, almost always, by a single sweep of malwarebytes. The days of fighting hard disk wiping horrors for days on end are gone. The only real threat remaining are Worms, and the last major breakout was almost a decade ago with MyDoom and Blaster.
Whatever is out there, the weakest link will almost always be the human; installing a piece of bloatware that is marketed on false pretences will not negate that risk[s]L4D - PC & Xbox 360[/s]

Yeah, I don't really need anti-virus software. The only torrent I've downloaded is this 18.8GB that had every DB/DBZ/DBGT and movies in it... yes, for 20GB (I saw they were in realtime files, and my friend had the torrent, etc). On top of that, the only sites I go on to is this site, YouTube, and MMOHunt (along with the websites of game devs), oh, and Wikipedia.
Free is free, even if it's a half-assed anti-virus program.

I don't understand how Macs in School get so many viruses. Everything on the internet is blocked!
Anyways, I have a sort of problem on my Desktop, and I would think it's hardware failure, combined with my own retardedness. When I try to turn it on, the fan get's real loud (like, jet engine loud) and as it starts up, it beeps a few times, and stays on a blank black screen.
Helpz pl0x? I was originally trying to fix a problem with the sound card. Somehow, I made it so that there is no sound, except for systems sounds. Obviously you could see why I would want to fix that.

Except that this bloatware came with the computer, apparently, or, to be more specific, the people who installed it. Yes, I got Staples to install the computer for me... well, my mother did, I didn't want them to. Ugh. At any rate, the guy remove their bloatware and, as said previously, waived the inspection fee.
