My roomate and I both have Nvidia chipsets, I have the 590, he has the 680i. he aslo has some fancy schmancy 600 dollar RAID card. We benchmarked both our chipsets running Nvraid on a RAID0 stripe and his nice ass RAID card using two SATA 150 120Gb WD 7200 RPM disks. The results varied very little; all three configurations were nearly twice the speed of a single disk (his fancy card was a bit faster than our chipsets implementation). I am not at my house or I would go ask him for the actual numbers. We also timed (using a stopwatch) map loads of BF2 using one SATA 150 WD 120Gb 7200 disk versus two, and the load time was almost cut in half, as was load time for windows.

As far as these NVraid chipsets go I was astounded by the difference. The reason we tested was because he was arguing that the chipsets RAID was surely implemented poorly and would eat up CPU cycles etc. Now we are both running RAID0 stripes (on our gaming machines anyway) on the NVraid.

I think RAID is well worth it for performance, at least with the only RAID I am experienced with (NVraid on the 590 and 680i chipsets). I am sure that the family of 5x and 6x chipsets from Nvidia all implement RAID similarly. But, if you are not technically inclined enough to bother, installing and dealing with RAID can present a problem. And there can be numerous other problems should you want to migrate your RAID to another system, or if one drive in your array fails, etc.

Sorry to threadjack, I have just had a very different, and quantifiable experience using RAID and wanted to express that fact.

Thanks for your input guys. I've ordered the parts and changed the PSU as suggested.

I'll let you know howit works once I've assembled it.

I suppose a zombie short film quallifies as fan fiction...

Since I had to create the story, write the script and than shoot and edit. I have both L4D games and I've always been obsessed with zombies. And since I'm a third year student at film school it only makes sense that my most recent film "TIME MANAGEMENT" is a revisionist zombie film about a college student trapped in a dorm room during a zombie apocalypse. It ended up winning my college film festival. Also, if you watch you'll notice I had to put Left 4 Dead in it as both an homage and a tool for the narrative. For those fellow filmmakers and zombie lovers here, you may want to give it a look. I'd appreciate the views/criticism/comments/etc.

    Thanks.

I am a filmmaker/writer aswell, and I really enjoyed this movie... Unfortunatly I wasn't able to comment due to my video card not allowing me to go on youtube (I watched it on my iPhone) so I couldn't comment. I didn't get the ending... but everything else is awesome.
