Thread: Something hosed

Not sure what yet, didn't spend too much time on it last night. But my comp went down sometime yesterday. Powersupply is fine. Video card seems fine (luckily a friend of mine is building a comp and I had his vid card at my apt.)

My guess is either Motherboard, EVGA 680i SLI or the CPU E6420 overclocked. So till I get it figured out. I will be gone for a bit.

Symptoms? What, precisely and exactly, is happening and what have you tried so far?

Well from reading EVGA's forums, it sounds like these boards, when you start upping hte voltage on the vdimm, start getting cmos memory problems. I recently just installed 2 more sticks of XMS2 DDR2 800 1gig sticks. I bumped the voltage from 2.1v to 2.2v. Some said it wasn't a good idea if you haven't redone the ceramique on the mosfet coolers. I did one better and replaced the Heatsink with a custom one that covers all the mosfets(and applied AS5, not the recommended ceramique since i don't have any ceramique) I am going to get at the computer tonight while I am helping a RL friend build his new Q6600 - 780i - 8800GTX comp. I have a second intel engineering chip i am borrowing from a friend. First I will see if I can get the bios reset using some tricks on the evga forums. If I can't get it to at least post from there, then I know its the MB, then RMA here I come. If it posts, then I will see if its the cpu, if so, then it looks like I am upgrading to a Q6600 quicker then I thought (originally e6420).

Well after 8 months of solid performance and very few BSOD's, my evga 680i bit the dust. Going to get an RMA going this weekend, and hopefully I can see it by next week. Until then, I will be using my old comp. Don't expect too much from it.

I need some help on this. I'm not familiar with HDMI and it's purpose and if it's worth hooking up to my tv.

I have a 32" Prima Progressive Scan HD TV. I got this back in 2005. It's a flat screen but not thin like the modern flat screen tv's are. It has a HUGE arse and weights about 100 lbs.

It's says Progressive Scan HD TV in one corner and HD TV 1080i in the other corner.

It has a DVI/HDCP port and two progressive scan/component video ports.

I currently have the xbox 360 hooked up to the Green/Blue/Red progressive scan/component video ports.

I just noticed my xbox 360 has a HDMI port that was hidden under the main video cable port. Sneaky little bastard.

Now I'm wondering if I get a DVI/HDCP-HDMI adapter and run the HDMI cable to the xbox, will I get better quality picture and graphics or nothing special?

I don't know much, but if you've got the plug and the tv has the hole, test it out.

The tv is a bit old, from 2005. It has the DVI/HDCP port, not HDMI. They sell HDMI-DVI/HDCP adapters so I CAN run HDMI cable from the xbox to the tv.

But is it worth shelling out money for the adapter to run HDMI or will the difference in video quality not live up to the money spent?

My tv is 1080i and I hear 1080p is better?

What you have now is fine. I've hooked mine up both ways and the difference is not that noticeable to be honest.

If your TV had a native HDMI input it might be worth it to you depending on what you want. Using HDMI would free up another component input port and it is pretty much idiot proof because it will automatically adjust itself to use output your TV's native resolution.

By using all those adapters the picture is likely to look worse as a matter of fact.

It's just gonna have one adapter, to hook one end of the HDMI cable to the tv since it does not have a HDMI port, but a DVI port instead.
