Re: Mic in Vista64
Don't blame creative for this one. Microsoft completely gutted the sound in Vista. It actually removed ALL dedicated hardware capability and ran it through software. Creative had to put a bunch of stuff in place to make the cards work like you'd expect. Something to do with the unified sound setup. Good for businesses, bad for gamers imo.

Creative has a very long and spotty history of driver issues and has made a history of pointing fingers at other vendors instead of stepping up and admitting their drivers are crap. Kinda funny that other vendors sound drivers really didn't have the issues Creative's did.

The difference is, as many problems as I've personally had with Creative product drivers, I've always - every single time so far - been able to find a solution. Some of the issues I've had in the past with ATI, I was unable to come up with a solution, and ATI's response to me was to "Wait for the next hardware revision".

I soured on Creative when the whole VIA chipset issue popped up. I had a choice of crappy sound, replacing my motherboard and replacing the sound card, and I opted to replace my sound card. Replaced it with a Diamond Monster card that worked like a champ until there were no longer drivers available for it. I bought Soundblaster Audigy, and that was fine until Vista. I had so many issues with drivers that I opted to go with the Bluegears b-Enspirer card. I don't regret making the change. It's based on the Crystal HD Audio chip, and drivers are rock solid. No more popping/crackling and no sounds getting stuck in-game. It came down to the Bluegears card or one of the M-Audio cards. I opted for the Bluegears on the recommendation from a friend.

If Aureal would have stayed in business, I'd probably be with them.
However, a new vendor has bought the right to build a card around the x-fi chip. It's the prelude. It will also do dolby digital live which is the MISSING FRIGGING PIECE of the ENTIRE x-FI line.
