Re: Anyone used Ubuntu for a server?

I'm not saying x64 isn't stable. I'm implying applications and drivers aren't as debugged and polished for x64 as their XP counterparts - or their Windows Server 2003 counterparts.

In my opinion, x64 is a kluge operating system that is best left to the morbidly curious. Based on my experience with x64, I would never run anything mission critical on it.

I personally run almost all of my servers on Ubuntu Server. while none of them are gaming servers, as a professional *nix admin I can say that Ubuntu makes a fantastic server platform. It has all the niceness of my beloved Debian, while being more usable and better supported.

As far as running a gaming server is concerned, however, that I couldn't speak to. Running games on it is a far cry from running a Tomcat or Zimbra server.

I would stay away from 64bit anything in general.. even ubuntu..hmmm let me ask a question first tho.. is there a 64 bit server side bf2 ? if not.. I would stick with the 32 bit for now being that your kind of new to linux. not all the 64bit libs are sorted out on the repos, so it will be hard to admin the system, let alone bf2.

if all your doing is running 16 clinets I doubt you or anyone will be able to tell a difference anyway. 64bit sounds sexy, but at the end of the day unless your running multi threaded 64 bit software its hard you wont see any speed incresses. the bottle neck will most likely be somewhere else.

oh and ubuntu is easy to use from a users stand point. I highly recament it to new linux users. in fact if I could get all the games I like to run on ubuntu I would never use winblows..

oh oh.. stay as far away from xp 64 as you can. its crap.
