Yeah but they have no overclocking headroom... Bump the 6850 up a bit and it will own the phenom.
Not to mention the e8400 is even faster than the 6850 at the same speeds. The Phenom will only oc a few hundred mhz. Atleast these are a better offering than the first go around of Phenom

comparing the AMD 9600 to the intel 6850.....that's a 25% power increase with 22% less price. (AMD more power, less price).

    You're saying you're going to get a 25% clock increase on the 6850? 3.7Ghz?

That's doable......assuming you have the hardware......but not guaranteed in most cases. And even if you could......the AMD is still 20%+ cheaper.

SJT....whats your OC at? 3.5? according to his 3dMark.... 3360Mhz. Of course, that's on a 6400, and nto a 6850.....but core to core...we know that 6850 isn't going to top 3.5, much less 3.7Ghz straight up, and certainly not for most users.

3.5 is cake for a 6850... 4.0ghz on good air is not uncommon either. But what I was really getting at is the new wolfdale. Sure its only a dual core but it will overclock like mad .. 4.5 ghz easy on air .. over 5ghz with better cooling ( phase/pelt/water chiller) I have my e4300 at 3.2 and its a 1.8 ghz chip ( 67% oc ) But even at the same clocks the wolfdale is faster than the 6850 ( according to some super pi runs i have seen ).. and the wolfdale only costs 224 bucks.

check out www.blazingpc.com plenty of people getting 6850's to 4.0ghz... It an overclocking forum where I hang out all the time.

    not 3.0. 3.7. big difference.

and I 100% guarantee you are not holding a 4.0 overclock on an intel e_____ striaght out of the box, on a majority of processors, and without sigingicant pieces of hardware to match it. Not all motherboards come with ridiculous timing and voltage adjustments. In fact, most don't.

Overclocking is gambling. sometimes you get lucky with a good chip.....but the chips are classified on performance characteristics when they leave the factory. They're in that bin for a reason.

What do you mean straight out of the box? with a decent air cooler Intel's over clock like crazy. I am using a scythe infinity to cool my cpu ( $40 air cooler ) . Stock voltage is 1.325 and I need 1.375 to get to 3.2ghz. Not running a fancy board either .. Asus p5n-e sli ( $120 ) and 2 gigs G Skill ddr800 I paid $50 for from new egg and its running at 1000mhz on 2.1 volts . You don't need ridiculous amounts of voltage either. 1.375 volts is hardly pushing it. There are plenty of people running 4.0ghz on a 6850. And really there is no more luck in getting a good chip 99.9% of the time you are going to get a chip that will over clock pretty good with an Intel.

Actually I am disappointed with my e4300, it will only do 3.2 and I have seen alot of them hit 3.4 to 3.5
And now a days most enthusiasts boards have loads of overclocking features. All it takes is some time and patience to get a good over clock.

piece of cake bd. im comfortably at 3.6GHz on my 6850 with vcore of 1.37V and vload right around 50C on a prime/occt/orthos test. i got plenty more room and ive actually gone higher but i backed down to an easy 3.6. Heavy has his at 3.8. Im on air and so is he i believe. so yea, this 6850 is a badass chip...better than you think.

so then.....why would you run at 3.6 instead of 3.7, 3.8, or greater?

we all know the answer.....so say it.

    Re: AMD phenom quad cores....

because no need to push it. i can run at lower temps, lower V...most people test to see how high their setup can go and then back it down. im not trying to set any records here. point is you said that its tough to get this thing past 3.5 and im just saying im at 3.6(stable)...talk to heavyG if you want to hear about his stable OC. Im here to say that you are wrong. id hate for you to mislead people into believing the current phenom (B2 stepping) is greating than intel dual cores. better at what? gaming...pffft!
    THANKS!

ah and if you want to buy a phenom id wait until the newer ones come out. they are supposed to be better.

The current stepping of the Phenom has a logic bug in it. The 9700 and 9900 were delayed until a new stepping could be made to fix the bug. Supposed to be out in 2Q08 instead of 1Q now...
