memtest, hands down the best utility for checking bad RAM.

Just a FYI... Hiren's BootCD contains illegal copies of copyrighted material... So... be wary of that.

Great bootable CDs that let you do all sorts of diagnostics on a system. The Windows version boots into an ultralight WinXP kernel with a ton of Windows-specific diagnostic tools.

All of these are free to use.

I always install Process Explorer and implement the functionality that has it replace Task Manager. Great for finding which process is holding open a file preventing deletion.

You know, I bet a lot of the newcomers to PC Diagnostic tools would love an article or two on this subject to help guide them. It could be a collaborative effort even. Each person writes a little about the utility they really like. Come on, it'll increase your e-peen/e-equivalentforwomen.
