Installing sata dvd burner on a GA-8KNXP mobo

I am using a Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Rev 1 board. The problem I am having is I am trying to install a Samsung SH-S203N DVD Burner on the sata connections and I cannot get the machine to find it.

It is connected on the Sil3112 connector which I tried both port 0 and 1. I have all the bios setting set to their defaults. I have also tried turning off the ICH5R via the bios to see if that would have any effect. The 3112 controller shows during bootup but doesnt recognize any devices. The burner does have power though because I can open and shut the tray.

I also cannot access the raid configuration screens for either controller when it comes up during the boot process even though I am hitting the correct keys that should bring the config screen up.

Lots of boards do not like SATA optical drives. Check for a BIOS update and find out what Gigabyte recommends you set your controller settings to for a SATA optical drive

    Multiplayer Modding (And other questions)

Howdy, folks. I had a few questions regarding modding in general, but specifically multiplayer modifications.

I downloaded a few skin mods and maps, but starting a campaign other than single-player doesn't show them, even if I host. So, my question is, is it possible to play with people and have custom skins show?

On that same vein, how does that work? Does everyone have to have the mods, or only the host? I assume if multiple people had conflicting mods it either wouldn't work, or folks would just see what they have active.

Another question, do mods usually work with non-Windows OS'? One of my Left 4 Dead 2 playing buddies uses a Linux or some other such system, and I'm not sure if he can even install mods.

Anyways, thanks folks! Sorry if any of my questions are particularly nubbish.

My understanding of the mods system is that the mods need to be installed on the server you're joining. I'm unsure as to whether this can be bypassed by simply hosting the game locally, although I'd imagine not.
In summary, the best way of ensuring you can use your own mods/maps online is by renting a server (they're not hugely expensive - $10-$15 a month should be sufficient) and running them on there. It's not a hugely complicated process - there's plenty of guides online.

As for the 'other OS' question, I'm afraid I'll have to leave that to someone who's tried it.

Every server you're playing at has to be set sv_consistency to "0" in its server-cfg, that should help.
