I had this issue a long time ago with the L4D2 demo (and later a few times with the full game), it worked fine for a few days and then suddenly I got the black screen you described, although my computer didn't crash...
I fixed the problem by doing a full re-install, going into Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2 and deleted all the left over files that were there after uninstalling the game through the steam gui.

Having read the last comment I'm reminded that I also went through the same process.
I have an old Nvidia 6800gt card transplanted to a quad-core server class box. I think the graphics in the game, and going from a 32bit to a 64bit, outstripped my cards ability to function. But during that process I also did all the usual stuff mentioned above and it still crashed my system.
With the latest driver it worked.
I bet it was because it was a beta 64bit driver I originally installed to the quad-core. I finally install the official 64bit driver and it worked.
