7800gt in SLI ------>8800gt or gts, is it worth it?
I currently am running a dual core amd 4200+ 2.2ghz over clocked to 2.6ghz on an asus 939pin mother board, with 2gb of matched corsair low latency memory, 7800gt cards sli mode, raptor 74gb hard drive and 250gb seagate secondary drive.
The question is... Does anyone think that buying a single 8800gt or 8800gts would be worth it at this point or should I just wait for the 98xx series to come out? I can get an 8800gt for under $200 dollars now and it is real tempting.
I am just trying to improve this old dog computer to perform a little better with the new game titles that are out, until I can build a beast in about a year.
Thanks for the help,
Trail

Re: 7800gt in SLI ------>8800gt or gts, is it worth it?
Waiting for 98xx is futile, now that word is out they are just G92 chips. You'll get a similar effect OC'ing a good 8800gts and it'll cost a lot less.
SLI'ed 9600's is a nice way to go, set you back a little over $300. The GTS 512 I just put in should do everything I need for a while, though, for $230. The GT is a great buy as well. Plus, either of those can always be SLI'ed later if you have an NVidia mobo.
There *should* be a new higher-end chip along one of these days from NVidia, but you can always play the "waiting for what's new" game. So the real question is for you: How long are you willing to deal with your current setup? Is it doing what you want, how big is the gap, and how annoying is it to you? To me, it was worth going to the 8800 GTS 512. (As one measure, my 3DMark06 went from 59xx with a X1900XTX to 10465 with the GTS.)

Well im not sure if im in the same situation as u bro but for the money... go with the 9600gt. Im curently building myself a new comp and am going to run that card in SLI.... later on as 3 way. But then again to take advantage of this card you would want to go with a nvidia board for the sli. the EVGA 9600gt is what im getting, and by the reviews and already seeing how one performs thanks to Guch... its a very very good card for the money.

Cecil, did you see much of an improvement over the 7800? Did your fps get any better during gaming?
Thats what I am looking for right now is a few more fps. (2142,tf2,etc.) I have been running around 30-40fps in most of the games I play and at times it gets pretty jerky or hard to follow if I move to quickly or the action gets hot in a small area.
Thanks
