Vista and Headsets
We are having many issues trying to get ANY headset to work. Whave plugged the Jack type speakers in the back,Pink and Black plugs. We have tried a set with black and grey plugs and a USB headset. We can get the desktop speakers to work, but the headset is mute. When we get the headset speakes to work the desk top stops. If we pull the headset speakers the desk top speakers wont resume working. We have gone through and done all the updates the sytem says is available. Lost...

From my experience, if the headset is plugged in when you start a program that is what the program will use to emit sound. If you unplug the headset because you wish to use your speakers you have to restart the program without the headset plugged in and the speakers will work.

Are you using an onboard sound or a soundcard? I haven't used my onboard sound with my new motherboard but my old one worked fine with my headset, just had to set up the settings right. I had a splitter so I could keep my headset and speakers plugged in and it worked great too. Just had to turn the speakers off if I wanted to use my headset or turn the headset down if I wanted to use the speakers as it channeled the sound through both.
With my current set up though, it doesn't work that way. And for the most part the problem is just with Steam games, but it doesn't like switching sound devices that easily. I have to make sure I have it set up to speakers or my headset, and even then the Steam games don't seem to want to accept it and it trys to force the sound out from 4 speakers...
What I'm getting at is make sure the software and all the apps are set up right, and the hardware is set up so you can use either of them. Your OS and soundcard software sometimes have conflicts so make sure you have them set to the same and they should work fine.

Re: Vista and Headsets
From my experience, the headsets work great, in terms of them working separately from the speakers. They use a generic USB driver usually so there shouldn't be a reason for it not to work. What exactly are you trying to do with the headset? Do you wish to have headset sound as well as desktop sound at the same time?
All of the settings for me, can be found by right clicking on the volume icon in vista and selecting playback devices and the enable the microphone you have to go to recording devices.
Any other questions just axe. I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with logitech usb headset
