Ok, so say I call "heads" for vista, and that's the side the coin lands on. Would the setup I'm putting together be sufficient? Or should I change anything? Ram,etc....

Ya, that setup should work just fine. I know for a fact Vista needs a good amount of RAM, or at least more than XP does.

You MIGHT be able to squeeze more RAM into your list without breaking $1000.

    Re: Vista or XP?

I use Vista for gaming and it kicks ass. I have zero problems with it. I did have a driver bug that got fixed about 8 months ago and now it works flawlessly.

The only applications that seem to give me trouble anymore are certain Asus motherboard tools, and some massively vertical applications such as this for a GPS based bus tracking system our local transit system uses (my roomate works for them so we were testing their software on various OS).

    Vista + games = DX10 lovin'!

2Gb will work fine for Vista. It does love RAM (for all it's cool pre-load and indexing functions) but if you dont have a lot, it wont eat while you use it.

Vista does have some trouble... but in all honesty, once you get through the "allow... allow... allow" popups, it's really not that bad. Plus I love seeing games like Crysis in all their glory.

Look at this for comparison if you want to see the difference:

Just turn of User Account Control and it's no longer a problem.

Get vista. It's stable all the horror stories are from the past. Looks way better too.

Same RAM, 1GB chip for $24.99. That will bring your rig up to 3GB of RAM... And you will still have 1 more slot open for more.

    Re: Vista or XP?

I'm pretty sure the way his mobo is setup... Since he has 4 slots, they probably just pair up. 2 x 2. So he will probably be using 1 true dual channel and the other will be chillin, just adding extra.

You need matched pairs of RAM in order to be running in Dual Channel mode. So, if you were to buy two of those sticks, you'd be fine.
