Re: Vista or XP?
Im a graphics lover kinda of guy (obviously, considering my major) so i like vista for its looks yet xp has functionaliy.
In terms of less work (finding drivers, troubleshooting unsupported programs like Adobe AE or Prem, etc) xp is what you want.
Ultimately, i have xp pro and vista 64bit, dual boot on my desktop at home. I can usually trouble shoot most errors in vista be there are some that i cannot figure out
Imo i like vista bc i can get it to work as i want it to and it looks good so you know my choice. How ever for those who do not want to do so much work or are not as tech savy xp is the way to go

The 2GB should be fine if you're just going to be gaming on it or nothing too extensive.
Vista does require more RAM because it has more features and bells and whistles so it will require more. Remember though, XP was the same when it came out as well. With every new OS, you should be expecting to see an increase in the needs of your hardware to keep up with the new features of the OS.
I'd just go with Vista 64, probably Home Premium, or Business class. It'll be great for when DX10 games start coming out more as they are very impressive. Plus if you have any problems, there are plent of people here to help you out if you need it.

For non-Creative sound cards there's a couple choices...
My personal card is the bGears Inspirirer:

The M-Audio Revolution:

The M-Audio has received decent reviews from several sites.
The ASUS DX:

The ASUS D2X:

I've heard good things about the ASUS cards. They're PCI Express to boot...
