When you read stuff like what you posted most are isolated indecents. Like on newegg you read user reviews from people who actually purchased from newegg. Some say the product is badass and so sweet, then you have some say its a piece of shit and dont buy it.
Notice the small percentage of poor quality.

You take a gamble when doing a BYOPC but why buy old stuff when you can have the new and now.

I am sure you still have XP so if you buy vista and it does not work out reload XP until a hotfix comes out or another update.

I don't even know what the hell that game is. Probably some old POS that just can't handle the new OS. :P

I'm actually quite surprised with how well Steam and the source games run on Vista considering how old the source engine is. No noticeable difference though between playing on XP (64 bit as well) and Vista.

Wait for Windows 7, around end of 2009, vista is a big memory hog.

    Re: Vista or XP?

I thought I'd chime in here since I am now in the same boat as you. I fear vista. Specially after hearing from numerous people about the problems that come with it.... Truth is, I don't want to screw around when it comes to it. With all the new games coming out, (Specifically Age of Conan) witch OS is going to give me less problems?

Oh yea.... I forgot to mention... I just purchased a 80GB hard drive, (7200RPM) witch it will be going on....

It gets better... I will be duel booting from a mac pro.......... Windows on a mac... God I'm scared, and vista already scares me... But I want the power of 64 bit processing! Is windows Vista 64bit really that much better then XP Pro 64bit? Don't they offer the exact same things?

If you were a Mac, Witch would you prefer? Windows Vista, or XP Pro 64?

    Re: Vista or XP?

99% of the 'hype' about Vista is FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) being spread by a bunch of people who tried Vista when it was first publicly released. A *LOT* has changed with Vista in the last 18 months or so since its release.

I first installed Vista in March of last year. I threw it on a secondary HD in my machine and was dual booting both XP and Vista. It started out that I spent most of my time in XP, but I forced myself to use Vista, if for no other reason than I wanted to learn the OS since it was a given that someone in my family was going to buy themselves a PC that came pre-loaded with Vista.

At first, most of the games I played (mainly 2142, BF2 and TF2) had weird stability issues. I could play a round or MAYBE two before the games would crash with memory errors. In trying to track this down, I noticed the games took up nearly twice as much memory as they did in XP. In late July, Microsoft issued a hotfix for virtual memory usage. I took the plunge and installed that bad boy. After applying that patch, the crashes became fewer and fewer. In addition to the hotfixes, Microsoft was releasing "Application Compatibility Packs" that increased the stability further. By about August or September, I was finally able to spend a majority of my time in Vista.

There were (at the time) still issues with Creative sound card drivers, so instead of giving them a chance to fix themselves, I dumped Creative and bought another card. It was at that point that all my stability issues vanished. In December, when I purchased my hardware upgrade, I finally dumped my XP partition and did a full reload of Vista. Haven't had a single issue with any of my games that were a fault of the OS since.

Anyone building/upgrading a new system or someone who has very current hardware (last year or so), I encourage to give Vista a try. The OS itself doesn't cost you much, and if you don't like it... you can always go back to XP. Microsoft is forcing everyone's hand by pulling XP off retail shelves and only offering it to certain OEMs who likely are paying huge sums of money to Microsoft to continue using XP.

Time for me to step off the soap box now.

Vista or XP? Vista or XP?

    Re: Vista or XP?

With 4 gb of Ram, there isn't much difference in available memory between the 64 and 32 bit version of Vista. The 64 bit version uses more memory space for all those extra bits so it washes to about the same amount as available with the 32 bit and 4 gb of memory.

At 8 GB's of memory, the 64 bit version gets fairly smooth.
