I've been using Vista since August of 2007. Prior to August, I dual booted XP & Vista for about 6 months. It was rough at first and almost unusable from a gaming standpoint until some hotfixes came out in October/November. Since then, I've had no problems at all with Vista. It was also about the same time that I dumped my Creative sound card. I had nothing but trouble with my sound.
At this point, the performance gap between the two is less than 5% and closer to 1-2% in most benchmarks.
I'd recommend Vista, depending on your hardware...

Re: Vista or XP?
I use Vista at work, home and on my laptop without any problems whatsoever. Gaming works just fine for me, you can turn down the Aero effects if you want for a modest performance boost.
As for your sound card, Creative's gotten slightly better about their drivers, however I say that because I'm not an X-Fi card owner, I just have an Audigy 4, and I've heard the worst troubles come from the X-Fi drivers.

Re: Vista or XP?
What operational aspects of Vista are better than XP and what positive impact does it have on your user experience? (All you Vista lovers out there)
I read a story in the USA Today about how terrible it is and how IT managers across the country are paying extra money when they order new PCs to "downgrade" to XP Pro.
I dont know one way or another, but XP ain't broken for me so I'll stick with it until I have to change.

Re: Vista or XP?
I am using Vista at home on my gaming rig, at work on my workstation AND on my laptop. My GF is running Vista on her laptop now as well. Nothing but good news from me: Vista is working out great. Several patches ago they released a driver that finally addressed all my X-Fi problems. Some people still have issues with Vista, even after SP1 though; Clintok for example.
I say go Vista these days for a new rig.
Vista offers full DX10 support (you dont get that from XP) for the newest games.
Vista 64 will allow you to use greater than 2-3Gb RAM effectively.
Vista seems to boot and behave more "snappy" than XP did.
I love the sidebar gadgets too personally.
