05-20-08, 01:12 AM #1Hard Drive Sweet Spot
I have been shopping around for hard drives for a few weeks now. With the release of the new solid state hard drives, I have been anxiously watching the prices of the good old fashioned magnetic disk hard drives. I was excited to find how much prices have dropped in the last six months.
When I built my current PC back in October 2007, the sweet spot for hard drives was 320GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0GB/s. These drives were priced between $90-100. I purchased two of them back in October, one for my gaming PC and the other for my home theater PC.
When I finally got the video capture card installed in the home theater PC, the 320 drive began to fill up... fast. I decided I needed more storage... but what to buy? After waiting around for a bit, I realized that 500GB drives are the current sweet spot for hard drive storage, ranging from $70-100. I settled for two of these:

Now don't get me wrong... 750GB drives are dropping fast, but very seldom do they break the $100 mark, and the 1TB drives are still just too expensive.
This drive is the same exact price on Newegg.com.

Why didn't I buy from Newegg? I ordered some stuff from them last month (Pioneer Blue Ray DVD Rom/DVD RW Drive) and they never shipped my order... it sat in "Stage 2" for about a week, then the order was cancelled. When I called them they said the product was out of stock. I asked, why not just ship it when it comes back in stock? They said it normally does, but they must have had a system glitch... I said, a glitch that randomly cancels orders? They didnt really have a good response... I reordered the drive from Newegg and received it in a few days... I was happy.
But, as a 5 year long Newegg lover and supporter... it still left a bad taste in my mouth. I decided to go with Zipzoomfly. I have used them for about 3 years now and give them my business from time to time.
If any of you are considering a new hard drive... my suggestion would be to go for the 500GB drives as they seem to be the sweet spot.
