    Single-Ear Microphone

My old cheapo Logitech headset has officially reached "ghetto" status, as it is now being held together with combinations of electrical tape and super glue. Moreover, I don't even use it as a headset, because I wubs mah 5.1 system, so it ends up half-on and half-off my head and ears, which is not the most terribly comfortable position.

I'm looking for a mic, and preferably just a mic, that fits over the ear, corded, with a standard 3.5mm mini-jack, noise-cancelling of course. I thought about a desk mic too, but I don't want to have to lean forward every time I want to talk.

What are my options here? Are there good single-ear mics available? Are there good noise-cancelling boom desk mics?

    Suggestions are welcome.

Get a headset and hang it around your neck like a necklace. That's what I do.

I got some el cheapo 11 dollar thing that fits your description. ..I can't even tell you what brand it is, as I don't see any logo on it...

Picked it up at Best Buy.

You know what maybe I should do this too Draco. My hubby is always complaining about not being able to hear it if he come in to watch me plus on those nights I game for a few hours my ears are sore. (from the headset)

    Re: Single-Ear Microphone

I always buy cheap headsets and mics. The one I have now is a 10 dollar set thats also being held together with tape and super glue. On occasion Ill get pissed and throw one, resulting in the damage, but at ten bucks I don't really care too much. Ive never noticed a difference in gameplay between a cheap one and an expensive set, you just sacrifice a little audio quality.

    Re: Single-Ear Microphone

First off.... imo there is almost never a major difference if even a minor difference between a 30 dollar headset and a 60 dollar headset. Generally you wont find a great difference in quality unless you either go really cheap (say 10 bucks).. or really expensive (say 200 bucks). What you primarily want is one thats comfortable.. and will last.

Also.. is there a particular reason you want a 1 ear headset? In my view thats like wearing a patch on one eye while playing. Its going to hamper your play to some extent. Just like in RL... when you take away an ear or an eye.. you will not hear and/or see as well.... dispite what you may think. Its also going to affect your sense of direction and not to mention noise canceling is great... but not if you have one ear completely uncovered....

    Re: Single-Ear Microphone

I think he's talking about doing with it what I do with mine.. Let the speakers handle playing the noises, but have the 1-ear headset clipped to my ear so the mic's by my mouth where I need it to be. I don't have the headset's speaker plug plugged in, just the mic, so I hear everything I need to from the regular speakers.

    Re: Single-Ear Microphone

I'm just looking for something that's comfortable and useful; I'd probably go with a desktop mic if I had some kind of assurance that it would always reliably pick me up from where I sit (ca. 2.5 feet). Does anyone use a monitor-mounted mic?

Could it possibly be one of these?

No no, a noise-cancelling microphone. It picks up sound on both "sides" of the mic, the one I speak into and the other with all the background noise. Then, it generates an out-of-phase signal to the background noise which it mixes with my speech, effectively cancelling out everything but my voice. As opposed to an omnidirectional mic, which just picks up everything.
