Virus so bad forced re-boot in safe mode
Yea thats right I had one that bad.
We have two computers at the house.
Intel-ATI My pc
AMD-ATI Wife/public pc
On the AMD rig last night a guest was playing with their myspace and whatnot. They love to add graphics backrounds and all sorts of crap.
This morning I am making breakfast bacon smelling all good then the wife comes upstairs and says hey there is a virus on one of the pc's.
I think to myself np I have some tricks up my sleave.
I come downstairs to check it out and I find the AMD pc with a new backround.
It says that I have a virus and need to run virus scanner 98pro edition.
I am like wtf.
Then it installs a screensaver on its own of bugs eating the desktop like taking bites out of the screen.
Real cute stuff.
I try and install AVG no luck got some errors.
Had to reboot.
Get back in and get error messages saying that I have a virus and need to install blah blah blah.
Adaware, Treng Micro, smitfraud.
Nada it does not work.
Then I boot into safe mode with networking to try the same steps but without all the huff and puff.
Reboots 3 minutes in no matter what.
I am sure this guest saw a pop up of, "Your computer has spyware click here to get rid of it".
Shit happens.
I am reformating it as I type this.
but damn forced reboot in safe mode
thats when you know you are fugged

why you need SiteAdvisor, just tell guests not to click on anything that isn't green. so long as they follow those instructions, 90-95% chane you won't have a virus the next morning (unless you sleep with them, then you might :P)

If you are ever able to boot into normaly mode make sure you turn off system restore. Then boot back into safe mode and run a virus scan. Sounds similar to the virus I got a few weeks ago that caused me to have to wipe my HD clean.
Nuck

Re: Virus so bad forced re-boot in safe mode
i work in support for an AV company and i got calls about this 1 several times a day. I havent mastered taking out this specific 1 so i always have to escalate it (it hurts me when i escalate stuff). this 1 virus is 1 nasty bugger, it can be disinfected but it is a long drawn out process.
